Rumor: |
|
What I found out: |
Chisholm/Hibbing Airport
Chisholm's name is first even though it's in Hibbing -Chisholm
doesn't pay |
|
FALSE
Chisholm levies just as Hibbing does to fund the airport.
Chisholm collects no taxes from buildings and business
that are on the airport property. Generally communities
believe when they share the airport, jobs will be created and
all communities will benefit from collaboration.
We are fortunate to have an airport and air service. |
Animal Shelter
Chisholm sends animals and doesn't pay |
|
FALSE
Chisholm doesn't use Hibbing's animal shelter. Chisholm
contracted out of Virginia, then switched to Contented
Critters. There have been no official talks about Chisholm using the
new shelter when completed but it is a possibility. |
Hockey
Chisholm kids come to Hibbing and pay the same as Hibbing
kids. Hibbing alone pays for the Memorial building. |
|
FALSE
Chisholm maintains and pays for their arena that is used for
the joint program as does Hibbing. Ice time is supplied
and used by both cities for the program. Chisholm arena staff
helps Hibbing with the ice at the old fairgrounds. The
concession stands at the Chisholm Arena is run by Hibbing
Youth Hockey. |
Fire Department
Chisholm only has a volunteer fire department - Hibbing has to
send over their fire department for big fires and Chisholm
doesn't pay |
|
FALSE
Chisholm and Hibbing
maintain a mutual
aid agreement which has been in place for some time now and
works. The communities are there for each other in time of
need. You may have noticed Chisholm fire trucks at the
Sammy's Pizza fire recently. Hibbing has also helped
Chisholm. |
Library
Chisholm used to pay something for library services but
doesn't any longer |
|
FALSE
Chisholm did pay for services from Hibbing for the library
administration in Chisholm, the contract is no longer in
place. Chisholm now has their own library administrator. |
Jail
Chisholm sends people and doesn't pay |
|
FALSE currently -
true historically
Chisholm pulled out of the jail agreement several years ago to
avoid loosing a police officer. As of January of 2008 Chisholm
is again contributing $5,000 annually into the jail.
This contribution was approved for the Chisholm 2009 budget.
There were some hard feelings on the issue, but the communities are
moving in the right direction again.. |
School
Chisholm refuses to consolidate school districts - they were
given the choice to consolidate and share a superintendent
keeping everything else intact and refused. |
|
Although this has been a LONG ongoing issue - it appears as
though both communities have a way to go. Many citizens
I have interviewed from both communities think it would be a
good idea to build a new state of the art high school with an
occupational training program near the college and send all
High School students there. Consolidating funding and
administration in exchange for better programs and athletics
in a neutral building is on the minds of many citizens.
I have heard comments about turning the exiting high schools
into community centers where people of all ages could go to
swim, do theater, take classes, and more. Seems these
citizens need to be as vocal as their counterparts. |
